So, this might sound familiar: you’ve poured everything into your guiding business. The logistics, the gear, the training. The sunrise wakeups, the shoulder-season hustle, the “we’ll make it work” days. But something still feels… scattered. Like the guests are out there, but the bookings don’t always follow. And the market? Yeah, it’s changing again.

If you’re nodding your head, you’re not alone.

The latest 2025 Adventure Travel Trends & Insights Report just dropped, and it’s got a lot to say about what’s shifting (and what’s staying steady) in our industry. Whether you’re a one-person fly fishing guide service, a climbing outfit with a growing team, or a wellness retreat leader figuring out how to scale sustainably—there’s something here for you.

Let’s break it down.

What's Inside

GuideR Adventure makes it easy to travel more and worry less by searching and booking your next adventure on our simple-to-use marketplace.

What is the Adventure Travel Trade Association?

If you’ve ever guided, staffed, or dreamed about scaling an adventure travel business, chances are you’ve brushed up against the ATTA — even if you didn’t know it by name. The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) is the global hub for adventure travel professionals. Think of them like the connector of dots: outfitters, guides, tour operators, destination marketers, gear brands, you name it. They support small businesses and global players alike through education, advocacy, and research — including this annual trends report that gives folks like us a much clearer view of where the industry is heading, and what’s actually working on the ground.

The trends reports are surveys of tour operators just like you!

Methodology Behind This Report

The Adventure Travel Trends & Insights: State of the Adventure Travel Indurary June 2025 report is grounded in real operator insight. Since 2006, the ATTA has surveyed its growing network of adventure travel tour operators to better understand what’s happening on the ground.

Each year, they invite businesses to share insight into their operations, guest trends, and what they’re seeing firsthand when it comes to traveler motivations, destinations, and activities.

For the 2025 report, a Qualtrics survey was distributed in mid-February to the adventure travel community, asking for data from 2024. Outreach included email reminders, social media, and direct follow-ups to boost responses. Between February 19 and April 16, they gathered data from 387 respondents, with 259 qualifying to be included.

The result? A broad, timely view into how real operators are navigating sales, bookings, marketing, travel trends for 2025, and guest behavior.

Considerations

Now, it’s important to note that 19% of organizations are headquartered in the North America and 31% of tour operations are outbound and inbound, 48% are inbound, and 21% are outbound. While the entire report is not focused in the US, there are trends that apply to the US tourism industry.

2024 Guest Stats

First, let’s lay some ground work of basic stats found in the 2025 report as it relates to North America tour operators.

  • Respondents served an average of 37% fewer guests in 2024 than in 2023.(1) However, that number is closer to -49.3% in North America.
  • The average guide-to-guest ratio went from 1:5 to 1:6 compared to the 2024 survey. (1)
  • North America continues to exceed the global trip fill rate of 65% at 71% in 2024. This is up from 63% in 2021. (1)
  • The majority of guests are either couples (36%) or solo travelers (24%), as opposed to groups (21%) and families (19%) in North America. (1)
  • 59% of guests are over 51 years old. (1)

Trip Spend Stats

The below stats aren’t specific to North America, but help guide client willingness to pay.

  • $3,000 (USD) – the median trip price (not including airfare)
  • 8 – Median number of nights
  • 76% of the $3,000 total trip cost is spent with local suppliers

Adventure Travel Is Stabilizing — But Evolving

We’re officially out of “post-pandemic recovery mode.” According to the report, bookings are stabilizing back to pre-pandemic numbers, not surging—and that’s actually a good thing. It means we’re moving toward a more sustainable, long-game business rhythm. However, the alarm from outfitting owners into this year so far has come from the dip in tour sales.

  • Median trip price: $3,000 for an 8-night experience
  • Most businesses have fewer than 10 employees
  • Trip fill rates hover around 65%

And here’s the part I love: over 75% of trip revenue goes to local suppliers. That’s a solid win for community-driven tourism.

What Today’s Adventure Travelers Really Want

Let’s talk about what matters most to your clients right now.

People are craving something that feels meaningful—not just a passport stamp.

“Hot” High-Demand Trips

The most high-demand trips expected are tours with custom itineraries and expert or specialist-guided. Yet, we saw with this report that women-focused and solo travelers made it to the top 10 trends.

Traveler Motivations

According to the report, travelers in 2025 are motivated by:

  • New Experiences
  • Go Off the Beaten Track
  • To Travel Like a Local

And if you offer Wellness-focused, detox/unplug, or luxury-guided experiences? You’re already speaking their language. Purposeful travel is on the rise.

There’s also a noticeable rise in “last chance” travel—guests wanting to see glaciers, wild landscapes, and rare species while they still can. Heavy, but powerful.

Hot Destinations + Activities to Watch

Hot Destinations

While the U.S. continues to be a stronghold for regional tourism, globally, travelers are eyeing spots like:

  • Japan + South Korea
  • Scandinavia
  • The Mediterranean
  • Antarctica (yep, still bucket list-worthy)

Activity-wise, running jumped a whopping 2 spots from #20 to #8 on this years report. (Who knew? But also… of course.)

Top Activities in North America

Cultural, culinary, hiking, cycling, and safaris are the top activities in North America.

Trending & Fast Growing Adventure Activities Overall

Other fast-growing segments:

  • Culinary
  • Running
  • Wellness-focused activities
  • Kayaking
  • Expedition cruising

Of note, climbing (mountain / rock / ice) was the only category in the top 20 to neither increase or decrease in popularity.

Profit, Pricing, and the Financial Pulse

Some good news: 73% of tour operators reported revenue growth this past year. And over 66% expect their net profit to grow in 2025.

Operators are also:

  • Launching new products or itineraries
  • Exploring new markets
  • Streamlining how they handle operations

That said, concerns about inflation, weather events, and geopolitical issues are still in the mix. But overall? The vibe is cautiously optimistic.

Sustainability Isn’t a Trend — It’s a Standard

49% of tour operators now have (or are pursuing) sustainability certification. Travelers aren’t just asking if your trips are eco-conscious—they’re expecting it.

Top Benefits of Tour Operator Sustainability Certification

The top benefits were:

  1. 74% – Helping protect/improve the natural environment
  2. 50% – Helping protect/improve my local community
  3. 47% – Helping protect/improve the local economy

Yet, the top barrier for operators between certification is the cost.

Top Tourism Sustainability Issues

What did fellow tour operators think are the top sustainability issues? Top focus areas include:

  • Wildlife Protection
  • Community Livelihoods
  • Climate Change
  • Mitigating Overtourism
  • Permanent Land Preservation
  • Culture Loss
  • Habitat Restoration

What’s Working in Tour Marketing Right Now

Spoiler: Word of mouth still rules.

But here’s what else is converting:

  • Social media ads (Instagram + WhatsApp, interestingly)
  • Tour operator partnerships
  • Content marketing (yep, blogs like this one)
  • Direct bookings through operator websites (57%!)

Interestingly, email is slipping a bit, and a lot of operators still avoid traditional OTAs altogether. The big takeaway? Be findable, be clear, and be where your people are.

What This Means for You in 2025

This isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about reading the room—and showing up as the guide or business owner your guests are already looking for.

So maybe this is the year you finally:

  • Add a second trip tier for beginner hikers
  • Partner with a lodge or yoga studio in your area
  • List your trips somewhere that can help you scale (hi, we do that)

Whatever your move is, now’s a good time to think about it.

Final Thoughts on Adventure Tour Operator Travel Trends

North America is facing unique economic challenges in 2025, however, indicators like trip fill rate remains strong. This is a great opportunity for tour operators to work to refine their customer experience and systems to double down on marketing efforts.
