I still remember my first time hiking in Pisgah National Forest. My husband and I just moved to the area and a new friend recommended to hike Looking Glass Rock Trail. We thought we were going for an easy hike and we were VERY unprepared. Friends don’t let friends go on hikes underprepared, so in this post we’ll share all of our top hikes and tips to feel prepared on your next hike in Pisgah.

Whether you’re looking for peace, perspective, or a fresh adventure—Pisgah’s the kind of place that meets you where you’re at.

Where is Pisgah National Forest?

Pisgah National Forest covers over 512,758 acres in Western North Carolina, and it surrounds popular mountain towns like Asheville, Brevard, and Black Mountain. Most of the best-known trailheads—Graveyard Fields, Looking Glass Rock, Daniel Ridge—are an easy drive from Asheville, often 30 to 90 minutes away. This accessibility is one of the many reasons locals keep returning—it’s nature in your backyard.

Why Pisgah National Forest Belongs on Your Bucket List

Pisgah National Forest is a sprawling patchwork of wild Southern Appalachian beauty, stretching across Western North Carolina. It’s stitched together with waterfalls, rhododendron tunnels, wide-open balds, and mossy creek trails that feel like something out of a fairy tale. Hiking Pisgah National Forest is a must for your bucket list no matter the time of year.

It’s the kind of place where you can breathe differently. Pisgah feels big, but also personal—it’s wild enough to wow you, but gentle enough to welcome first-timers. You don’t need to be a hardcore backpacker to fall in love with it. Just bring curiosity, and maybe a snack.

We’ve collected a few resources to help you plan your hikes in Pisgah.

What Most People Get Wrong About Hiking in Pisgah

Pisgah isn’t a theme park. There’s no main entrance, no ticket booth—just a massive network of trailheads, gravel roads, and quiet corners. And while that’s part of the magic, it also catches folks off guard.

Here’s what to know before you go:

  • Trail difficulty sneaks up: That “moderate” hike might climb 1,500 ft. The more off the beaten path you go, the rougher the trails get.

  • Weather changes fast: Rain, fog, wind—all in the same afternoon. Pisgah get’s a good bit of rainfall each year so expect trails to get wet and muddy.

  • Trail signs can be minimal: Download a map ahead of time or bring a paper one. While we love Pisgah, not all trail signs are well kept and it can be easy to get turned around.

  • Sometimes the best hike is the one you didn’t plan: Pisgah rewards the curious. Don’t be afraid to get out into the backcountry and away from the crowds.

  • Expect to be disconnected: There is little to no cell service for all providers in most areas of the forest, including on top of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
