While research shows that many people have mixed feelings when it comes to AI, surveys show that about half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots. It’s estimated that 4 in 10 U.S. adults use AI chatbots for researching information, despite skepticism. First, let’s talk about types of AI for travel. 

  • Generative AI (ie. Itinerary & Content Generation) – This type of AI best acts as conversational travel agents that process user input information to generate build day-by-day itineraries, suggest restaurants, and inspire travel ideas
    • Two types of Generative AI for travel are:
      • AI Itinerary Generators: MindTrip and Layla are AI trip planner tools that are tailored to travel-only uses and provide more structured output than Large Language Model output. 
      • Large Language Model (LLMs): This includes platforms like Chat GPT, Claude, and Google Gemini can generate similar travel ideas, but using a pre-build agent would be more helpful in getting the desired output vs. chatting with a general bot. 
  • Flight Price Predictors: Platforms like Booking.com or Expedia use robust algorithms to signal when users buy travel products and to control pricing. An example of this that you may see is strong fluctuation with flight prices depending on the day of the week and time of day.
    • Dynamic Pricing & Demand: Airlines and hotels adjust pricing based on demand and competitor rates using this type of predictive AI. 
    • Predictive AI (Pricing & Travel Logistics): This type of AI in travel is used by many travel companies and booking engines, such as Expedia, on the backend to analyze user preferences and data to forecast trends. 
       

Now, let’s shift to the impact of AI on adventure travel. Keep reading to see what we really think about AI’s current impact. 

How AI for Adventure Travel Isn’t There Yet

While were in a boom when many AI travel planning apps and websites are gaining traction, I’m not seeing the power deep learning, predictions, and more intricate actions are learning the information needed in the adventure travel space. Could it be helpful in planning a one-day fly fishing trip for your family, yes. However, the more remote and complex adventures like tru-hiking, backcountry activities, and expeditions there are still blaring gaps. 

AI use cases for travel can be an entire blog post on it’s own, but for the intent in this post, let’s break down where I think the fundamental gap with AI for adventure travel. 

The question I pose is, do AI travel apps actually help for adventure travel? 

At this point in time, my answer is no. Why?

How AI Itineraries Go Wrong For Adventure Travel

Adventure travel has unique nuances and elements that can limit how much you can control in your trip. As much as humans are built to naturally want to take control, weather and wildlife can drastically change your plans. There are key safety, risk, equipment, and logistics considerations that AI tools just haven’t honed in on yet. A few key gaps when using AI for outdoor adventures are: 

  • Lack of Logistic Online Information – AI is only as good as the information available online. If the travel information you’re looking for can’t be found by a search engine or in a language model from user input, then AI won’t show it. This can include:
    • Permits or Lotteries – When it comes to overnight and wilderness camping permits, day use permits, specialty activity permits, lotteries, AI has some red flags. While AI can tell you if a permit is required and how to attain one, it may miss key details essential for your trip to work. It may not show you how competitive these can be, key dates for submission timeline and wait periods, permit quotas, and which areas the permits are good for.  
    • Tour operator websites – A surprising majority of tour operator either don’t offer online booking or don’t have a website at all, which will limit in many outdoor-centric travel destinations. 
    • Very Weather Dependent Activities – Especially in adventure travel, weather can make or break a trip or put you in a very dangerous position.  I’ve yet to see Travel AI’s really integrate with weather apps to give destination related information that can help make real-time. Most of the time it will provide generic “what to expect” weather advise. 
    • Wildlife Animal Safety – Being wildlife aware when adventuring outdoors can be complex. While AI may warn you that your trip may be in bear country, I tend to see that unless you prompt it to tell you of specific risks, it may leave that info out entirely. The worst thing that can happen is to be unaware that you’re traveling in an area where you should have bear spray or equipped with the knowledge of what to do when you encounter wildlife.

  • Humanized Touch – AI simply can’t replace a human demonstrating how to tie a fly on your fly line, where to cast your fly in the water, or critique your fly casting real time. In the same how AI can’t replace a tour guide, it can’t replace how a travel advisor that deeply understands outdoor adventure understands human nuances that AI can’t. A travel advisor knows when people need to take a break from a long travel day, how jet lag can get to you, how to plan activities when you have a family that likes to travel differently, or provide recommendations based on personal local-only knowledge of a destination. 
  • Remote Locations – Using AI to build a travel itinerary before you leave is one thing, but if you need to ask AI to make changes to your plan or provide an update, you’ll need cell service. Even if we’re not talking about traveling to the most backcountry or remote destinations, many national parks and recreation areas lack cell service, leaving you stranded. 
  • Travel Time Estimations – I see AI struggle to estimate the time it takes to travel between stops, arrival times,  milage, and traffic pattern. Some AI travel planning tools are better than others, but largely real-time estimates are a vary ways off, which would be impactful for adventure roadtrips.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely because you’ve thought of using a travel advisor before. There’s an odd stigma, even now, that travel agents are a dying trend. Yet, I’d argue that for adventure travel, they’re more helpful than ever!

Regardless if you’re tru-hiking the Colorado Trail or kayaking in Rainbow River State Park, having a reliable source of local expertise can make all the difference in a stand out trip.
