What to Expect 

Discover Palmer’s glacially carved landscapes as you hike the Bodenburg Butte. This trip starts with a stop at a glacial outwash plain. We’ll learn about the area’s glacial history and get a scenic view of our hiking destination. From the river, we’ll drive about 10 minutes to the Bodenburg Butte trailhead, a local landmark with an 800-fot summit. During the hike, you’ll learn about the history of these magnificent landscapes. Pending good weather, you’ll catch breathtaking views of Knik Glacier that a camera simply can’t do justice. Discover the region’s geological transformation on this 3-mile roundtrip hike.

Less than an hour drive from Anchorage will bring you to this incredible place you won’t soon forget. Keep in mind that this hike has over 500 stairs and hikers should be able to climb up and down stairs comfortably.

  • This hike takes you to the summit for views of the glacier, not on the glacier itself.

Frequently asked questions

This experience is perfect for solo adventurers or groups traveling to Anchorage, AK. Included in your package, is pick-up before your trip and drop-off after your trip at your location of choice in Anchorage. Anchorage is only a ~1-hour from Chugiak, AK. 

We recommend brining the following: 

  • Comfortable hiking boots or walking shoes 
  • Comfortable hiking attire (long pants and a breathable shirt). We don't recommend cotton or denim if possible, as those clothes get very heavy and cold when wet. 
  • Small backpack
  • Additional layers, such as hat, gloves, and a light jacket
  • Rain jacket and rain pants 
  • Water (1-2 liters) 
  • Light snacks
